87637356 1 Birth Center or Hospital Delivery?Having gone to the hospital for the births of our two sons, it never occurred to me that our children would prefer a birthing center for their baby’s birth. My first thoughts were; How safe will mother and baby be? And, what if something goes wrong?

The Facts

After some research I learned that birthing centers are staffed with certified Nurse-Midwives; experienced registered nurses who have also completed a postgraduate obstetrical program and are certified to care for low risk pregnant women.

CMWs are certified by taking a national board examination and are licensed by the state to practice nurse-midwifery. Not only do they assist women in having their babies, they can also handle their routine gynecological health needs.

In the birth center the mid-wife assists with the labor and is continually assessing the mother’s well-being as well as the baby’s. In the event that the mother should need medical care or transfer to the hospital, there are OB/GYN physician consultants available.

After visiting the birth center and conducting research both Grandma and Grandpa are excited about all the possibilities.
