grandparents First Time Grandparents

My husband and I are at long last joining “The Grandparent’s Club” at the beginning of an exciting, joyful, adventure-filled roller-coaster ride. We can hardly wait!

Wedding memories  were “in the not too distant past” when on one rainy Sunday afternoon at our favorite Asian restaurant our son and daughter-in-law handed us their camera to show us some pictures they had recently taken.

One picture was obviously of great interest to them; a small rectangular strip with writing too small to see without a magnifying glass. They waited expectantly for a reaction, but all they saw were two blank faces wondering what in the world they were looking at!

A Pregnancy Test Strip?

I know you younger grandparents are shouting at the computer, “You don’t know? Have you guys been hiding under a rock? It is a pregnancy test strip!” How could we know; we had never seen one of these things until now? What surprise, what joy, what amazement we experienced when we were told what we were seeing! It takes a little while to begin to wrap one’s mind around this miraculous news.

After all we had begun to wonder if our children and their spouses would ever have children of their own. With their combined wedded years being around sixteen, and no pitter-patter of tiny feet, we were not sure that this day would ever come and were semi-resigned to it.

Now we will be the ones going to Babies R Us, Target, and Wal-Mart to see the plethora of furniture, essential items, clothes and educational toys that this little one will need. There will be a stack of catalogs such as Pottery Barn, Sears, and Penney’s on our coffee tables in place of the lovely picture books we purchased on our summer travels.

Now we will be the ones to proudly take thick stacks of grandchild photos to family gatherings and class reunions so that we can show them off to our friends and family and hear them “ooh” and “ah” appropriately.

They may even try to escape when they see us walk in with our albums in hand, but what goes around comes around, folks. Now it will be your turn to pat us on the back and tell us that our grandchildren are beautiful.

Lets just see what the next several months hold; we can hardly wait!
